Description
Deep, Swirled miters create crystal pillars notched with rows of teeny cut diamondswhich wrap around the body of this double-sterling mounted Gorham inkwell, fully hallmarked on both top and bottom including Gorham’s 1890 date mark.
Sterling capped inkwells are relatively easy to find, but double-mounted ones — few and far between. Good presence at 4 1/8” high with a base diameter of 2 3/4”. An early piece from the Brilliant Period when quality and pride in craftsmanship was king.
The bulbous sterling cap is repoussé, hand chased, and quite elaborate. There is also a sterling collar. The 1/2” wide sterling band about the base
is thick, substantial and also elaborate in design.
This fine piece has no condition issues. The cut glass is clear and brilliant with no cloudiness or residue or damage. Likewise, the sterling — no dings, dents, excessive wear or other issues. The original hinge pin is secure with a wee bit of side play. AND . . it even has the original ink cup within.
The vast majority of ABP inkwells out there have dinged tops, chipped bodies, and various other types of damage. This one has none of those . . . AND . . . it's gorgeous !!!
