Description
1982 Chrysler New Yorker
The Chrysler New Yorker is an automobile model that was produced by Chrysler from 1940 to 1996, serving for several years as the brand's flagship model. A trim level named the "New York Special" first appeared in 1938 and the "New Yorker" name debuted in 1939. The New Yorker name helped define the Chrysler brand as a maker of upscale models, priced and equipped to compete against upper-level models from Buick, Oldsmobile and Mercury. Until its discontinuation in 1996, the New Yorker was the longest-running American car nameplate.
In response to fuel efficiency, this year's New Yorker, (1982), is downsized but not without the sacrifice of all the luxuries for this key brand to Chrysler since 1938. Powered by an 8-cylinder engine of 318ci distinction, and sporting button and tufted Kimberly velvet seats, power options and a Rolls-Royce styled front end, this car was aimed directly at the upscale buyer who wanted to the Chrysler status, but with fuel efficiency. Passed from dad to son this 2 owner car is classing up and raising the rent of our endless halls here at Classic Auto Mall.
Exterior
Dark Mahogany Metallic showing some dents and dings, as well as scratched and the passage of time with some dulling, still rust free steel shows as the beneficiary of being garaged all its life between father and son. Square and rectangle design abound and rightfully so as we are smack dab in the early 1980's and this was all the rage. A chrome enshrouded vertically ribbed grille is flanked by dual rectangle head lighting on either side with a signal bar above, all embedded in a chromed bezel. On the back portion of the front quarters, we see some chrome edged "venting" and nicely shaped chromed wheel well surrounds which come together below the doors in a shiny rocker trimming. The rear C pillar is covered in brown vinyl and has New Yorker badging just in case you forget! A squared off trunk lid and rear deck, along with some angled rearward at the bottom tail lighting bar and another shiny bumper below is just the trick to show off this car as putting on the ritz. Some of the trimmings around the tail lighting are peeling off and badging is missing on the lid passenger's side. Turbine style wheel covers are wrapped by thin whitewalls all around.
Interior
For the touch of class door panels are highly appointed with a framing of burl appliqu, with an insert panel of brown velour. Dark brown vinyl covers the armrest and window and lock toggle panel and below is brown carpeting. Slipping into the wide ultra tufted and buttoned Kimberly velvet brown buckets in front, and bench in the rear, I could nearly go to sleep in this cloud-like seating. An original dash is fronting these chairs, and all the necessary instrumentation to monitor the mechanicals are available for your viewing pleasure. All this is within either burl veneer appliqu or a stainless panel just like the radio, temp controls and the "computer" which will display trip gas consumption info and mileage. Interior is in overall excellent condition, however a few tears in the velour are within the door jambs coverings for the rear interior. Brown carpeting is below, and a tan headliner fairly tight is above.
Drivetrain
A nicely detailed 318ci V8 topped with a single 2-barrel carburetor and a 904 3-speed automatic transmission coupled with an 8.25 inch rear axle whisks you down the highway with low RPMs.
Undercarriage
Spotty surface rusting is noted upon all parts underneath. Nothing involved to the point of concern, but it is slowly invading. Independent transverse torsion bar suspension is up front, and on back, leaf springs. Power disc brakes are on the front and power drums on the rear. Note the exhaust has a hole in it.
Drive-Ability
We got her to start however it ran rather rough and produced a lot of extraneous noise and not the exhaust kind. This was concerning, however, not diagnosed or attempted to be. Due to the rough running we went around once and called it quits, but it did stop ok, and steering seemed solid as we limped around.
Showing some of its age on the exterior and undercarriage. The interior is beautiful, and well appointed, and the car could be brought up to snuff fairly easily on the cosmetic end. On the mechanical end it needs to be investigated further.
