On September 19, 1987 Pope John Paul II made an historic visit to Detroit. However, this was not his first time in the Detroit area. Prior to becoming Pope as Archbishop Karol Wojtyla, he visited Hamtramck in 1969 and in 1976 he visited SS. Cyril and Methodius, the only Polish Catholic seminary in North America. He became pope in 1978.
When he arrived at Detroit Metro Airport in 1987 on his TWA Boeing 727, it was the first time a pope had ever visited Michigan. For the duration of his American
travels, the plane was dubbed “Shepherd I”.
During his two day stay in the city, the Holy Father visited Blessed Sacrament Cathedral, the Ford Auditorium, the Hart Plaza, and the Pontiac Silverdom
and greet his flock. Polish-born John Paul II made this special visit to the Polish-American community of Hamtramck as part of his long-standing tradition
supporting Poles at home and abroad.
The tickets will be shipped in acrylic holders to prevent damage in sleeve insertion for further certification.
