Description

GREAT BRITAIN George III Silver Penny 1792. A tiny 12mm silver coin. His bust with title/crowned denomination, date and abbreviated additional titles. George was King of England during the American Revolution and one of the longest reigning monarchs in British history at 60 years (1760-1820). The silver penny is the smallest denomination in British "Maundy" sets of the period, given out by the monarch on Maundy Thursday as a charity gesture to the poor, an ancient British tradition dating back to the middle 1600s.  This issue is a  one year type and commonly known as "Wire Money" due to the unusually thin scrip numbers on the higher 2, 3 and 4 pence denominations which came with the sets.  Krause values an Extremely Fine example of the penny at .  This one appears better, virtually all detail and pleasing contrast between the portrait and devices and the fields.
