October 2008 marked the 100th anniversary of the publication of
The Trail of the Lonesome Pine,
John Fox's 11th publication and one of two million-selling books.
He would publish two more before he died in 1919, and two additional were published posthumously.
    “…
John Fox Jr. is the most important local color writer to take the
    Appalachian Mountains
and its people and culture as his subject
    .”
    Justin Kurynny
    About John Fox
A Harvard graduate and popular writer, John Fox, Jr. published 14 novels and almost 500 short stories.
He produced two of the first novels to sell more than a million copies (
The Little Shepherd of Kingdom Come,
    and
The Trail of the Lonesome Pine
    )
    .
Three of his novels were also produced as movies (the two million sellers and
    The Heart of the Hills
    ).
The Trail of the Lonesome Pine
was the first movie to be produced outdoors in Technicolor. Produced every summer since 1964, it is currently the official outdoor drama for the
    Commonwealth
    of
    Virginia
. Songs from the movies were also recorded by multiple other artists.
Most of Fox’s works are based on the people of the Appalachian Mountains, specifically the Cumberland Plateau areas of
    Kentucky
    ,
    Tennessee
    , and
    Virginia
    .
He mixed with the rich and famous, and was friend to, and Rough Rider with,
    Teddy Roosevelt.
    Born and raised in
    Kentucky
, Fox spent the last half of his life publishing all his works from Big Stone Gap, Virginia.
